Description
The Fountain and Basin is a Grade II listed structure located in Welton The Green, dated to 187- (with the last digit illegible). This fountain is constructed from ashlar stone and is designed in the Perpendicular style. It features an octagonal pier with a string course and floral panels at the top. The cornice is decorated with diaper work and brattishing, and grotesque figures are positioned at each corner, although all the heads are missing. Below the ogee cap, which is topped with a poppyhead finial, there is a frieze of shields. An inscription in Gothic script beneath the string reads, "In memory of Anne Popple ad 1874. I will give (a) vow God, that if (you have) a thirst, of the fountain of the water of life, (drink) freely." Adjacent to the fountain is a hollowed-out stone that forms part of the base, which originally had a spout (now missing) that directed water into the basin.
