Description

The building at 1 and 3 Main Street in Kirkburn is likely a late 18th century house, later adapted to include a shop. It is constructed of colour-washed brick with a pantile roof. The building is two storeys high, with three windows on the first floor. A rear range also exists. Three steps lead to a centrally located entrance to the house, featuring a 20th-century part-glazed door set within an elliptical arch. A plank door with a divided plate-glass window serves as the entrance to the shop, positioned at the right end of the building and sheltered by a segmental carriage arch. Two 16-pane sash windows are placed under elliptical arches to the left of the house entrance. A two-course band runs horizontally along the facade. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows with stone sills, which interrupt a stepped eaves band. Chimneys are located at the ends of the building and along the ridge.
