Description

The Old Rectory is a house dating from the early 19th century, with earlier origins and later additions and alterations. It features pinkish-red brick faced with pinkish-yellow mathematical tiles on the front in Flemish bond, topped by a pantile roof. The building is two storeys tall and has five bays, with single-storey screen walls on the sides and additional ranges at the rear. The central hallway plan includes three steps leading to the central entrance, which has a six-fielded panel door beneath a fanlight with radial glazing bars, framed by a pedimented Doric doorcase. The windows throughout are 12-pane sashes set under channelled wedge lintels, and the eaves are wooden. The roof is hipped, with stacks on the sides and rear. On either side of the house, there are single-storey walls with rounded niches under flat arches made of gauged brick, topped with ashlar copings. At the rear, a staircase window features 12 fixed lights with radial glazing at the top, and there are 12- and 18-pane sashes on the sides.

Inside, there is a Neoclassical fireplace in the sitting room, while the rear sitting room likely has a fireplace from the 18th century. The interior also includes a cantilevered staircase with stick balusters and a ramped handrail, and some rooms have shutters. In the right bedroom, there is a late 20th-century hand-painted reproduction of the Chinese wallpaper from Nostell Priory by Lady St Oswald, and the sitting room features panels of sangerie by Lady St Oswald.
