Description

East Lodge and screen walls to Cave Castle date from the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of white brick with stone dressings and has a concealed roof. It features a central archway flanked by three-story, single-bay towers. The archway has a four-centred carriage arch and a lower four-centred pedestrian arch to the left, above a sunk moulded panel bearing a coat of arms. There are false machicolations and a crenellated parapet. To the right of the archway is an octagonal turret, and to the left, a square tower. The square tower has a blocked single-light, square-headed opening with a hoodmould on the ground floor, a larger similar opening on the first floor, and a narrow oblong opening with a hoodmould on the second floor. An attached octagonal turret to the left of the square tower has a blank gunloop on the first floor. An octagonal flue is also present. The octagonal turret to the right has openings obscured by ivy, and all turrets have crenellated parapets. Crenellated screen walls extend to the right and left and terminate in square piers, each with a cornice capped with a large stone bear and blank gunloops to the faces of the walls.
