Description
This is a substantial red brick house built around 1709 in Beverley, likely as a property for sale. It was originally commissioned for H Spendlove, an attorney. The building is two storeys high and features rusticated quoins and a brick cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with machine tiles. It has four sash windows with glazing bars on the front elevation. A doorcase, added around 1785, is notable for its applied attenuated Doric columns, entablature, and shaped bracketed pediment. The front door is of heavy oak, with a brass bacchante head knocker and a semi-circular fanlight. Original wrought iron guard rails and scrapers are also present. The building sits on a heavy, projecting base with stone coping. A later wing has been added, featuring an arched doorway and modern garage doors below two windows and a blind panel to the first floor. The garden elevation has a picturesque appearance. The interior retains panelled rooms on the first floor and a staircase with heavily twisted balusters. Historically, the house served as the town house for the Constables of Wassand.
