Description
No 5 Ladygate is a late 17th-century building that stands two storeys tall. The front facade, which dates from the late 18th century, is made of red brick. It features a modern tile roof at the front and a pantile roof at the rear. A fluted lead rainwater head and a stucco plinth are also present. The building has four windows with painted stone heads, hung sashes, and glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is one window and a bow window with glazing bars and a shallow cornice.
The central entrance is coupled and framed with wood casing, architraves, and consoles that are decorated with anthemion, leaves, and beads, along with a frieze and bracketed cornice. Although this framework has been retained, the original entrance has been altered to include a single door with six fielded panels below a rectangular ornamental fanlight, flanked by modern sidelights.
Inside, there is a fine contemporary staircase featuring a closed and moulded string, spiral balusters, plain newels with moulded drop finials, and bolection moulding at dado level. The dining room contains a bolection moulded chimney-piece that is from the house but has been relocated. The drawing room features a high-quality late 18th-century composition chimneypiece that originally came from Cheadle Hall in Cheshire.
