Description
The lamp standard located south of the chancel of St Mary's Church, opposite the Ladygate junction in Beverley, was constructed between 1824 and 1826. This late Georgian lamp standard is made of cast iron and was produced by John Malan of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, the words 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824' are inscribed. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from an octagonal step in the form of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
