Description
The White Horse Hotel and Foster and Plumpton Chemist, located at Nos 18, 20, 22, and 24 on Hengate in Beverley, is a Grade II* listed building. This structure has medieval origins but was refronted in the late 17th century. It features a timber-framed construction with colour-washed brick and stands two storeys tall. The building has three doors with six panels and one door with four panels. The main entrance to the inn is adorned with pilasters that have delicate sunk lines, key patterns, shaped consoles, and a shelf cornice. Above this door is a wooden carving of a horse supported on brackets. Most of the windows date from the early 19th century; the ground floor includes six slightly segmental windows with shutters, a small early 19th-century shop front, and a wide entry leading to the yard. The first floor, which was formerly jettied, has four sash windows (one of which has been reglazed) and four casements. A projecting band of brick runs under the eaves, and the roof is covered with machine tiles. The interior retains a remarkable number of late 19th-century public house fixtures and fittings, which are almost entirely intact. Additionally, the posts and brackets of the bressummer can be seen approximately two feet behind the late 17th-century frontage. National Monument Register Photograph shall be added as last sentence of the description.
