Description

The war memorial located in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church was created around 1920 by an unknown craftsman. It is made of limestone and is positioned just inside the churchyard, aligned with the main axis of the church.

The memorial takes the form of a Latin cross, featuring raised initials "IHS" at its center, along with square, Tudor-style foliage bosses adorning the faces of the cross and the ends of its arms. The cross stands on an octagonal pillar that has a 14th-century style capital and a square base. This pillar is supported by a square pedestal with a plinth, which is set on a single step. Both the pedestal and the plinth are inscribed in black lettering. The east face of the pedestal reads: "This cross was erected/ By the inhabitants of/ Leven/ To the Glory of God/ And in grateful memory/ of those who have fought/ and fallen in the Great War/ 1914 - 1918." Below this, the plinth is inscribed with "World War/ 1939 - 1945." The north and south faces of the pedestal each list nine names in the format of abbreviated rank, full name with middle initial, and abbreviated regiment or ship, arranged alphabetically except for the first two. The north and south faces of the plinth below each carry two names in the format of full name and abbreviated regiment. The west face, which faces the church, is uninscribed.

The National Inventory of War Memorials indicates that the monument was unveiled around 1920, but no further historical details are available. War memorials hold significant historical and cultural importance, connecting local communities to major international events, and this memorial meets the criteria for listing.
