Description
The Railway Station is a railway station built in 1846 by G T Andrews for the York and North Midland Railway, with later additions and alterations for the North Eastern Railway. The building is constructed of brick and features slate roofs. The main elevation is symmetrical, with wings that have four windows in recesses flanking a central section that includes four windows and two doors beneath a later glazed canopy supported by iron brackets. The lower outer sections of the wings have three arches, which are either blocked or contain windows or doors. The station has tall brick chimneys and a good hipped glazed roof canopy over the track, which was altered around 1900. The far platform includes six windows with fixed glazing bars, as well as doors to the waiting room and yard. There is also a footbridge linking the platforms.
