Description
South Airmyn Grange Farmhouse is a brick farmhouse dating to the mid-to-late 18th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of brick, with rendered surfaces, and has slate roofing to the main range, and pantile and Yorkshire slate roofing to the kitchen. The building follows a double-depth plan with a symmetrical two-room central entrance-hall facing south, and a kitchen and outhouse wing to the right. It is two storeys high, with three bays, and includes a single-storey, single-bay wing and a lower, single-storey, single-bay outhouse to the right.
The front features a plinth and two stone steps with moulded nosings leading to a part-glazed, six-panel door with a three-pane overlight, set within an architrave and flat keyed stucco arch. Original flush wooden architraves with sills frame the 19th-century four-pane sash windows, each topped with a keyed arch. A two-course brick band runs along the first floor. Stone-coped gables with shaped kneelers and end stacks are a defining characteristic. The wing to the right has a 20th-century casement window to the kitchen and a board door and casement beneath segmental arches to the outhouse. The kitchen roof has two courses of slates at the eave level, transitioning to pantiles above, topped with a stone-coped gable, shaped kneelers, and an end stack.
The rear elevation features stone steps to a central part-glazed panelled door, flanked by single sashes; the left window sits beneath a keyed rubbed-brick basket arch, and the right beneath a keyed rubbed-brick flat arch. A first-floor band is present. Similar windows are found on the first floor, with a central keyed round-headed stair window.
The interior includes a moulded cornice to the entrance hall, a pilastered round arch to the rear stairhall, and a good open well cantilevered staircase supported by a wooden column, with a ramped and wreathed handrail, column-on-vase balusters with square knops, and fluted column newel. The upper hall has moulded plaster frieze and cornice. The drawing room on the ground floor, to the left, features a fielded-panel dado, fluted dado rail, moulded plaster panelling, a coved plasterwork frieze with festoons and foliate decoration, a dentilled cornice, and a composition chimney-piece with a fluted surround, urn and festoons to the frieze, a moulded overmantel, and a pair of half-domed alcoves in pilastered surrounds with fluted archivolts. The dining room, on the front right, has a dado rail and moulded cornice, along with a pair of alcoves with fielded-panel doors in architraves. A study at the rear left displays a moulded cornice, a chimney-piece with a fluted frieze and ornate cast-iron grate, flanked by arched alcoves with fielded-panel doors in keyed pilastered surrounds above fitted chests of drawers. Fielded-panel window shutters, reveals, and doors appear in architraves throughout the house. The roof structure includes a six-bay arrangement with braced queen struts (possibly later insertions) and pairs of staggered butt-purlins. The farm stands on a sandhill alongside the 17th-century Dutch River. An adjoining range to the west is not of special interest.
