Description
The Raikes Mausoleum is a mausoleum built in 1818 for Sir Robert Raikes. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a circular plan, likely inspired by Roman architecture. The structure is a tall single storey sitting on a basement, with a rusticated base that has segmental openings for the basement. Access is via eight steps leading to a sealed doorway that is rendered and lined, framed by an architrave with scrolled brackets supporting a projecting cornice. Above the doorway is a corniced panel inscribed with "AEDIFICAVIT ROBERTUS RAIKES ARMIGER AD MDCCCXVIII".
The mausoleum is adorned with eight Doric pilasters that divide it into bays, with every alternate bay being blind. The other bays feature projecting panels with cornices and blocking courses that carry sarcophagi in low relief, along with ventilation holes set in sunk corniced panels. The frieze includes triglyphs and guttae, topped by a Doric cornice, blocking course, and a stepped ashlar dome. Surrounding the building is a circular flagged area defined by a dwarf wall, which once supported iron railings that have since been removed.
