Description
The Orangery, located approximately 10 metres to the south-west of Burton Constable Hall, is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1788 and 1789, with later additions and alterations. It was designed by Thomas Atkinson for William Constable. The structure is built from pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar dressings and a glass roof.
This single-storey building consists of seven bays, with the outer bays slightly projecting forward and topped with pediments. An ashlar plinth supports the structure, and there are three steps leading up to the central entrance, which features double multi-paned glass doors and a fanlight with glazing bars. The remaining windows are 30-pane round-arched sashes with radial glazing at the top, reaching full height.
A moulded impost band runs along the building, and the spandrels are adorned with paterae, except for the outer bays, which display circular plaques featuring figures. The frieze is decorated with palm fronds, and a cornice leads to a low parapet that is topped by a central figure of plenty, flanked by urns, pineapple finials, and female figures on the outer pediments. The roof slopes downwards towards the rear.
