Description
Bewick Hall is a house dating from 1636, as indicated by a datestone, with a rear wing added in the mid-18th century. It was remodelled in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of orange brick, including some overfired bricks, in an irregular English garden wall bond, and has a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and features four bays arranged in a 2:1:1 pattern.
On the ground floor, there is a door made of four bolection-moulded panels with an overlight above, and four-pane sash windows with sills, all set under segmental brick arches. There is a 20th-century garden door at the far left. The first floor also has four-pane sash windows with sills, positioned under segmental brick arches. The eaves cornice is dentilled brick, and there are external end stacks with offsets that have been rebuilt to the upper levels, along with plain close verges. Both the left and right gables feature a chamfered brick plinth and a band at the first and attic floor levels. A brick with the date 1636 is set into the right gable at first floor level. The rear elevation also has a chamfered plinth and first floor band.
Inside, a spine beam, which is now cased, runs the full length of the house on intermediate posts. To the left of the entrance door, there is a room that includes a re-used 16th-century hollow-chamfered and roll-moulded bressumer above the fireplace. A room in the rear wing features a seemingly re-set chamfered principal joist with ogee stops. The staircase, dating from the 19th century, has a cut string with turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
