Description
Dovecotes and stables, adjoining a screen wall and gateway, were built in 1815 for Thomas Wilson. They are constructed of red-brown brick with pantile roofs on the dovecotes. The layout consists of single-room dovecotes connected by a screen wall that has a central gateway, forming the south side of a foldyard.
The dovecotes are two-storey and single-bay. The one on the right features a step leading to a ground-floor board door with a 4-pane overlight beneath a segmental arch, flanked by breather slits (the one on the left is blocked). It also has a first-floor board door beneath a segmental arch and a pyramidal roof. The left dovecote is similar but has a 20th-century sliding garage door replacing the original ground-floor entrance, and a first-floor stable door with wrought-iron strap hinges.
The stone-coped wall slopes down to the gateway, which has a 20th-century pier to the left, double board gates with strap hinges for the main entrance, and a segmental-headed pedestrian entrance to the right with a board door. The left and right returns feature segmental-headed first-floor openings with raised brick surrounds; the right one is blocked while the left has a board hatch containing five rows of round-arched dove-holes with shelves. The adjoining ranges at the rear are not of special interest. This structure is included for its group value.
