Description
The lamp standard located adjacent to the Minster railings opposite The Old Minster Vicarage was built between 1824 and 1826. This late Georgian lamp standard is made of cast iron and was produced by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, the base is inscribed with the words 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824'. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from a narrow collar and is designed in the style of Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, culminating in a modern copper gas-type lantern.
