Description

A terrace of houses built around 1780 for the Yarborough family. The terrace comprises numbers 55 to 63 on the west side of North Bar Within in Beverley. The buildings are of red brick construction with a slate roof and contain 3 storeys topped with attics, featuring four simple dormers. A dentil brick cornice runs along the eaves. There are 14 windows in total, with near-flush window frames and gauged flat arches, which have been painted and some reglazed with glazing bars. The doorcases are of wood, with architraves, fluted friezes, central tablets decorated with ‘Adam’ urns, and enriched pediments supported on consoles, topped with Gothick fanlights. Each house has a six-fielded panelled door, wrought iron guard rails, and stone steps. A shallow bay window was added in the 19th century to the ground floor of each house, mirroring the ornamental details of the doorcases. The interior of number 61 retains an original staircase, which may have been designed by William Middleton.
