Description
This is a house, dating from around 1805, built for Daniel Sykes. It is constructed of white brick with stone dressings and has slate roofs. The main body of the house is three storeys and five bays, arranged symmetrically, with two-storey, single-bay wings extending to the right and left. A projecting porch features unfluted Doric columns and is flanked by eight-pane sashes set within pilastered surrounds. The double-leaf six-panel front door is topped with a fanlight containing radial glazing. To either side of the porch are two-pane sashes below cambered wedge lintels. A first-floor band and sill band run around the building, above which are five sashes with glazing bars, also below cambered wedge lintels. A second-floor sill band marks the level below five six-pane sashes under cambered wedge lintels. End and axial stacks rise through a hipped roof. The right and left wings are of a similar design; the wing to the right has a two-pane round-headed sash within a round-headed recess with an impost band. The wing to the left has a similar blocked opening, with a 19th-century window inserted to the right. On the first floor of the left wing is a six-pane sash, with a sill under a cambered gauged brick arch, while the right wing shows two sashes with sills and glazing bars also under similar arches. Paired eaves brackets are found around the hipped roof. The interior has been altered in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, but some pine beaded-panel doors remain. The Boardroom and an adjacent ante-room on the ground-floor right side retain elegant early 19th-century cornices.
