Description
Hail Mill is a windmill tower dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of tarred brick and features a tapered round tower that stands five storeys tall. There are entrances on the north-east and south-east sides, both with 20th-century rebuilt square heads, and a pair of windows at ground level. The first floor has four windows, while the upper floors each have two windows on the north-east and south-west sides. The doors and windows are aligned on each side, and the windows have sandstone sills beneath segmental header arches, although some are damaged and most window frames are missing. The mill has a toothed iron kerb. Inside, the main timbers of the first and second floors are still present, along with one set of stones in situ on the first floor. There is a shaped cast-iron support for the first-floor beam. The mill formerly had three sets of stones and was derelict at the time of the last survey.
