Description

The boundary wall to the Paddocks is a garden wall built in 1843 by Edward Baxter. It is constructed from random rubble and red brick, featuring tile copings. The wall is L-shaped, with the northern section measuring approximately 100 yards long and standing 4 feet high. The eastern section is about 200 yards long, reaching a height of 6 feet for the first 50 yards, and then increasing to 9 feet for the remainder. This taller section includes brick courses at one-third and two-thirds of the height, along with an additional course beneath the logback tile copings.

At the northern end, there are brick gatepiers and a segment-headed doorcase with a plank door. To the north, there is a later 20th-century opening with ramped walls and brick piers. The 6-foot high wall features four courses of red brick at the top and rounded tile copings, with a curved corner at the north end. About halfway along the wall, there is an inscription made of white stones displaying the date and the initials of the builder, 'EB 1843'. The 4-foot high section has a blocked doorcase on the east side and a 20th-century opening on the west side. No buildings of special architectural or historic interest have been included from the parish of Coniston.
