Description
The Ancient Manor House is a house that was rebuilt in 1753, as indicated by the datestone, and was Gothicised in the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick, pebbledashed, and colour-washed, with pantiled roofs, forming an L-shaped range. The building is a single storey with attics and features a two-window front.
At the center, there is a two-storey gabled porch with a pointed single-chamfered arch beneath a hoodmould. To the left of the porch, there is a canted bay with windows that have glazing bars, while to the right, there is a sliding sash window with glazing bars, sheltered by a tiled timber canopy. On the first floor, the porch has an oblong window with latticed glazing bars, and the gable is adorned with ornamental barge boards. To the right, there is a gabled roof dormer featuring a two-light latticed window. The right side has a raised coped gable and an end stack, while the left side has a hipped roof.
This house is noted as the first in a series of small houses that were either Gothicised or built in the Gothic style by the Sykes family of West Ella Hall in the early to mid-19th century.
