Description

A pair of houses, Numbers 20 and 21, were built around 1836 as part of the original development of Rock Park, which was laid out by Jonathan Bennison. The houses are of neo-classical design and are constructed of stucco, with the ground floor rusticated. They have Welsh slate roofs. Each house is two storeys high and follows a symmetrical design with a double-pile plan and a side entrance. The slightly advanced outer bays feature a canted bay window to the ground floor and a 12-pane sash window above, set within a moulded architrave. The central bays have tripartite sash windows on the ground floor and a 12-pane sash window above, also within a moulded architrave, with a panelled apron and a double string course. Angle quoins and an eaves cornice are present. The return elevations incorporate a central, round-arched doorway topped by an entablature supported by paired console brackets. All windows in Number 21 have been lowered, and the original mouldings and rustication have been removed; the building is included in the listing due to its group value. Number 20 has square gate piers with stepped pyramidal caps, and cast iron gates featuring an acanthus motif.
