Description
Numbers 1 and 2 are a pair of houses built around 1836, located in Rock Park, Rock Ferry. They feature an ashlar façade with rusticated quoins and a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate. The houses are two stories tall with a basement and have a symmetrical layout, each with a side entrance and a double-pile, two-unit plan.
The architectural style is enriched classical, with projecting single-storey porches on either side that have panelled doors, architraves with console brackets, and a parapet. The front has a four-window range that was originally symmetrical. The lower windows are round-arched sashes, although in No. 2, one has been replaced by a bow window. The basement features renewed spearhead railings. The upper windows are 8-pane sashes, also renewed, set in shouldered architraves with a key stone and entablature above.
At the eaves level, there is a stone-carved frieze, and both gable and axial stacks are present. The river frontage to the east is enhanced with decorative stonework, including 8-pane sash windows with segmental pediments on brackets, flanked by blind niches that suggest Venetian tripartite windows on the upper storey. The first floor has tripartite sashes with key-blocks and stone balconies, although these have been replaced in No. 2. Similar tripartite windows are found on the ground floor. The gate piers on the street elevation are square with moulded caps, although one is missing.
These houses are part of the Rock Park development, which was laid out by Jonathan Bennison in 1836-1837.
