Description

Numbers 5 and 6 are a pair of houses built around 1836, located on Rock Park in Rock Ferry, Birkenhead. They are constructed from coursed and squared rubble and topped with a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a picturesque Gothic style with an asymmetrical layout.

On the street side, No. 5 is a single-storey structure featuring two ranges with a semi-circular bay supported by corbels at their angle. It has a gabled porch with a four-centred arch above a plank door, along with an earlier 20th-century gabled extension to the right. The elevation facing the Esplanade is two storeys high and symmetrically planned with three bays, highlighted by a central narrow advanced gable above the hallway. The entrance features paired part-glazed doors set in a four-centred archway with a hood mould above. To the left, there is a large canted bay window, while the other windows have been renewed in their original openings, each with hood moulds. The house has a corbelled eaves course, coped gables, and gable end stacks.

No. 6 consists of two parallel ranges with a central entrance on the street front, which is accessed through a coped gabled porch. A projecting stack is located to the right, and there are small mullioned windows to the left. Above, three gabled dormers are present, and all gables feature exaggerated kneelers. The three-storey, three-bay elevation facing the Esplanade has a central advanced narrow gable accentuated by octagonal pilasters. The entrance here also has paired part-glazed doors in a four-centred arch with a hood mould above. To the left, there is a two-storey canted bay window, with a newer bay added to the upper storey. The right-hand bay contains two-light mullioned windows and a renewed oriel window on the first floor.

At the street elevation, there are paired octagonal gate piers topped with stepped pyramidal caps. These houses are part of the original Rock Park development designed by J. Bennison in 1836.
