Description
Fort Perch Rock is a fort that now serves as a museum, built between 1826 and 1829 by Captain J. Sykes Kitson of the Royal Engineers. The structure features battered walls with roll mouldings and a parapet, along with round corner towers. The central gateway is approached by a causeway on elliptical arches and has a segmental-headed opening flanked by paired Doric demi-columns, an entablature, and a parapet adorned with scrolls at the ends, as well as a cast iron relief of the royal arms. The fort includes 10 gun ports and 6 lateral stacks. The left tower has a mid-20th century two-storey concrete structure, while the right tower supports an iron tank. Inside, the main range to the south has a lean-to asphalt roof dated 1838, and the entrance features paired rusticated piers and an entablature. There are gun emplacements on the north and west parapets, with additional gun placements, likely added later, behind those to the north. Various blocks on the north and west sides are probably from the 20th century. A plaque on the site records its erection and cost. The fort was built to defend the approach to Liverpool.
