Description
A bank, originally incorporating a residence, dating from the early 20th century with later 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed in a free style, incorporating classical and Arts and Crafts details. It is built of ashlar sandstone and roughcast brickwork, with gabled and hipped roofs and rendered ridge chimney stacks with moulded caps. The roof is covered in plain red tiles.
The building occupies a prominent corner location. The entrance bay is positioned at the corner and is expressed as a corner turret. The south-east entrance is flanked by granite Tuscan columns, supporting a moulded architrave, pulvinated frieze, and cornice. Double doors with two panels each give access to the interior. Above the doorway, the segmental front of the turret features a curved four-light window with six-pane casements. A moulded cornice supports a frieze decorated with relief figures, below a tapering conical roof with a lead finial supporting a weathervane.
The east and south street elevations are two storeyed with attics, and slightly project on the first and attic floors. The ground floor banking hall has two tall semi-circular window openings with glazing bar sashes, the upper sash being taller than the lower and incorporating radiating bars. A moulded storey band supports the roughcast first floor, which has squat corner pilasters and advanced three-light windows with six-pane casements. A broad attic gable is expressed as a giant pediment, defined by a moulded storey band and barge boards with dentil ornaments. A three-light window is located at the gable apex, with four-pane casements.
A lower two-storey bay continues north of the east gable, featuring a canted bay window with five mullioned and transomed lights, each with six panels below four panes. The first floor has a four-light window with six-pane casements.
The interior of the bank has undergone extensive alterations in the late 20th century, and no original features remain. Later suspended ceilings may conceal the original ceilings.
