Description

A pair of houses dating from approximately 1840, built of stucco with a slate roof. The buildings are two storeys with an attic, and comprise seven bays, with the end bays projecting under pediments. A sill band runs along the first floor, and there is a top frieze and bracketed eaves, with quoins at the corners. The windows have architraves and casements; the ground-floor windows in the end bays have friezes and consoled segmental pediments. The first-floor windows in the central bays have segmental heads, hoods, and keys, while the end bays have balconies with pierced balustrades, friezes, and consoled cornices. Small attic windows are present, with wreaths above those in the end bays. Re-entrant porches have round-headed entrances with architraves and pierced parapets. A cross-axial stack and return lateral stacks are visible. The rear elevation features similar detailing, with channelled rustication to the basement store. End canted bay windows are also present. Other notable features include an ornate verandah and a balustraded balcony. The building is situated on a steep slope and serves as a prominent landmark in New Brighton.
