Description
Nos. 42 and 42A Wellington Road is a house built around 1835, which has since been divided into two properties. The building is constructed of stucco and features a slate roof. It has one storey and consists of five bays, with the central three bays projecting forward. The entablature displays a rich Vitruvian scroll frieze. The second and fourth bays each have a canted bay window with angle pilasters, round-headed lights, and apron panels. The first bay contains a window with an architrave and two round-headed lights, while the fifth bay features a projecting round-ended conservatory from the mid to late 19th century, which has an ornate base with round-headed lights and late 20th-century slate roof coverings.
The central porch is supported by paired Ionic pilasters and has a round-headed entrance, with a half-glazed door that includes round-headed lights. There are four chimney stacks topped with decorated pots. The gatepiers are designed with paired Ionic pilasters and roof-like caps, with the gatepiers on the left featuring segmental pediments. The front garden is enclosed by ornate iron railings and gates. The rear of the property is similar and includes a basement. The central two bays have a two-storey canted bay window, while the flanking bays have canted oriels topped with cupolas. An ornate iron verandah and balcony complete the design.
