Description
A terrace of six dwellings, now offices, was built around 1725 by James Gillespie Graham as part of the Hamilton Square development. The development was instigated by John Laird in 1825. The buildings are constructed with ashlar facing and have a Welsh slate roof with axial stacks. They extend over three storeys with a basement and attic. The 18-window range is arranged 3-12-3, with the outer bays emphasized by full-height pilasters over the first and second stories, and an additional attic story above the cornice. Each unit has round-arched windows to the rusticated ground floor; Doric pilasters to the doorcases of the outer bays; and Doric porches in the central range. Upper windows are 12-pane sashes with moulded architraves in the central range. The attic is lit by dormer windows in the central range. Original features, including staircases, remain in several of the houses. A moulded cornice and blocking course run along the top. The return elevation to Mortimer Street has three bays, with a doorway to the right set within a Doric porch. Cast-iron spearhead railings define the basement area, and cast-iron sphinx-like foot scrapers are present. Flanking wall and gate piers adjoin to the north-east.
