Description
No. 1 Merton Road is a house that was originally the kitchen wing of a shooting box belonging to the Earl of Derby. It dates from the later 18th century and is constructed of stone, with the left half made of small dressed stone and the right half of ashlar, which is likely a later addition. The building has a stone slate roof and stands two storeys high with four bays.
It features a cornice, and the windows in the first and second bays have wedge lintels and three-light horizontally-sliding sashes with glazing bars, where the top panes are pointed. The windows in the third and fourth bays also have wedge lintels and sashes but do not have glazing bars. The central entrance has a Tudor-arched head with a faceted keystone and a 20th-century six-panel door. There is a worn plaque between the first and second bays that is said to display the coat of arms of the Earls of Derby. The house has a central cross-axial stack and a stack at the right gable end.
