Description

The Town Hall in Bootle was built in 1882 by J. Johnson. It is constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys with an attic and consists of eight bays. The ground floor is adorned with a frieze and cornice, while the top has an entablature and a panelled parapet. The windows have flat architraves, with most being casements; the first bay has four ground floor windows. The first floor features paired composite pilasters, and a central large round-headed window with small-paned glazing is topped by a segmental pediment, flanked by niches. Below this are panels displaying the arms of Lancashire towns, with a pediment and flanking finials above. The second bay contains a round-headed entrance framed by a Corinthian aedicule and an open pediment featuring the Bootle arms. The second floor window has an elaborate frame.

The two-stage tower has Composite pilasters on the lower stage, which includes round-headed windows. The top stage displays pedimented clock faces, turrets, and a short spire with an octagonal cupola and iron finials. The next three bays feature pedimented dormers, with the third bay being canted. The end three bays have pedimented mezzanine windows and paired first floor windows set between flat pilasters. The low front wall has granite piers that support lamp standards with 20th-century lamps and bollards designed as lighthouses that hold chains. The left return to Trinity Road has seven bays that are similar and a 13-bay later addition; the ground floor exhibits channelled rustication, while the first floor has pilasters. Inside, the main hall is decorated with stained glass windows that display the arms of Lancashire towns.
