Description
Public Baths built in 1888 by G. Heaton. The building features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a hipped slate roof. It is two storeys high with five bays and has one-storey, two-bay wings on either side. At the rear, there are two large gabled wings, with the left gable having been rebuilt. The structure has a cornice over the ground floor, a top cornice, and a parapet adorned with ball finials. Flat pilasters frame the windows, which also have flanking pilasters and transoms. The end bays contain two-light windows, while the central canted bay has one, two, and one-light windows. Round-headed entrances flank the central bay. The parapet features a central panel and end panes with pediments and flanking scrolls; the central panel is inscribed "PUBLIC/BATHS," and the flanking ones display the arms of Lancaster and Bootle. The flanking bays have two-light windows. The right gable is designed in a Dutch style, complete with ball finials, an elliptical-headed window, and flanking niches. The left gable is from the 20th century. There is a rear stack with machicolations at the top. This building is included for its group value.
