Description

The Education Department building and its front wall, located on Oriel Road in Bootle, were constructed in 1886 by J. Johnson. Originally serving as a library and museum, the building is now used as offices. It is made of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays.

Notable architectural details include a faceted plinth, a top panelled frieze, a cornice, and a parapet adorned with finials. The ends of the building have flat pilasters, and the ground floor windows are paired, featuring round tympana with roundels and foliage, as well as archivolts and imposts. The entrance in the first bay is round-headed and includes a key, a consoled entablature, and a panel above inscribed "FREE LIBRARY/AND/MUSEUM" within a segmental pediment. The first floor's first bay has a round-headed window with an open pediment, while the other bays have rectangular panels. The parapet above the first bay displays a roundel with arms supporting two seated figures, topped by a pavilion roof.

The low front wall is complemented by granite bollards that support lamp standards with 20th-century lamps, along with cast iron bollards designed as lighthouses that hold chains.
