Description

Blundellsands United Reformed Church, Crosby, was built between 1904 and 1905 by architects W.G. Fraser and A. Thornely. The church is constructed of large blocks of snecked red sandstone, with green slate roofs. It is designed in a Free Perpendicular style.

The building features a nave running on a north-south axis, with a short chancel, east and west transepts, a north-east tower, and a north-west stair-turret and cloakroom. The square, three-stage tower has angle buttresses, a two-centred arched west doorway with a double-chamfered surround and hoodmould, two small lancet windows on the second stage, tall coupled round-headed two-light windows on the third stage, and a stepped and pierced embattled parapet. The gable of the nave has three small rectangular windows below a large two-centred arched window of 1:3:1 lights with free tracery in the head, and gable coping carried round as a parapet which is then stepped and ramped down to the stair-turret. The stair-turret is designed as a set-back two-storey wing with a three-sided west end, incorporating a doorway on its north side and tall cross-windows to the gable. A polygonal single-storey cloakroom is located in the angle, featuring mullioned two-light windows, a parapet, and a steep, polygonal slate roof with a finial.

The interior includes narrow transverse passage-aisles with moulded two-centred arches on octagonal columns, a wooden wagon ceiling, a west gallery, and a good First World War memorial window in the chancel.
