Description

Sandford is a villa dating from the later 19th century. It is constructed with painted ashlar at ground floor level, brown brick above, and has painted stone dressings and a hipped slate roof. The building is an eclectic design, combining Palladian proportions with Victorian Baroque features. It has a rectangular double-depth plan.

The exterior is symmetrical, with a 1:3:1 window arrangement across three storeys, the outer bays projecting slightly. The ground floor features channelled rustication terminating in a broad, triple-layered frieze, straight-sided rock-faced quoining to the corners and outer bays, a convex moulded frieze over the second floor, and a prominent moulded cornice. A large round-headed doorway is centrally located, with a banded architrave and keystone, flanked by rectangular sashes with semi-circular tympana. Large four-pane sashes are found in the outer bays of the ground floor, set within moulded surrounds with rounded corners and keystones. The first floor has four-pane sashes in the centre and outer bays, with floating crested cornices. The central first-floor window is flanked by narrower windows; the window to the left has been blocked, while the window to the right retains its sash. The second floor has three small square windows breaking the frieze, all with altered glazing. Large chimney stacks are situated to the left and right. The right-hand return wall has a prominent canted bay to the front room and a shallow rectangular bay to the rear, both with cornices and blocking courses, and windows at the first and second floors echoing the design of the front. The rear of the building and the interior have not been inspected.
