Description

5 and 7 Little Crosby Road are a pair of cottages, likely built in the early to mid-18th century, that have been remodelled and altered over time. They are constructed of hand-made red brick, with some modern brickwork on the first floor of No. 5, which also features sandstone quoins on the left side at ground level and a rendered right-hand gable. The cottages have a graduated slate roof and a double-depth plan, with lean-to additions at the rear.

The exterior consists of two low storeys with four windows in total, separated by a vertical joint. No. 5 displays remnants of a brick band over the ground floor, a simple square-headed doorway to the right, and two 3-light casement windows on each floor, all with renewed joinery. The presence of modern brick above the first-floor sill level and rectangular patches of modern brick below the windows suggest that this building has been raised. It has a double-flue chimney stack at the center of the ridge.

No. 7, located to the right, is almost symmetrical and has a centrally placed doorway with a 20th-century door and canopy. Each floor features a 3-light casement window to the left and a 2-light casement window to the right, all with segmental-headed openings and gauged brick heads that are narrower than the current openings, which also have renewed joinery. There is a ridge chimney at the junction with No. 5 and a large gable chimney on the front slope to the right.

The interior has not been inspected. The cottages are adjacent to No. 3 on the left, with the junction interlocked at the first-floor level. Together, these buildings contribute to the character of the Little Crosby Conservation Area, forming a valuable group with similar scale but varied dates, materials, and styles.
