Description
2 and 4 Little Crosby Road are a pair of cottages with an attached lean-to, likely built in the early 19th century in two phases and altered over time. The cottages are constructed of red brick, with No. 2 featuring English garden wall bond and No. 4 in Flemish bond. They have graduated stone slate roofs and brick chimneys, while the lean-to is made of random rubble with quoins and a Welsh slate roof. The buildings have a linear layout, with No. 2 on the right having a single-depth plan and a parallel back-extension to the first bay, along with the lean-to at the angle. No. 4 on the left has a double-depth plan, both being double-fronted, and the lean-to is attached to the left end of No. 4.
The exterior consists of two low storeys with four windows arranged in a 2+2 pattern, separated by a vertical joint. No. 2 has a square-headed doorway slightly offset to the right, featuring a stone lintel and a 20th-century half-glazed door, flanked by two square two-light windows on each floor. No. 4 has segmental-headed openings with brick voussoirs, including a doorway slightly offset to the right of center with a board and half-glazed door, flanked by three-light small-paned windows on both floors. The ground floor windows have small top-hung casements in the center lights, while the upper windows have central casement openings. A large lean-to without openings is attached to the left gable wall of No. 4.
The cottages contribute to the character of the Little Crosby Conservation Area, which features a valuable group of buildings of similar scale but with varied dates, materials, and styles.
