Description
Smithy (Number 1) is a small house and attached smithy located on Little Crosby Road, likely built in the 18th century, with the date 1713 inscribed on the smithy wall at the junction. The house, which is probably from the 19th century, has been altered over time. The house (No. 3) is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and features four courses of large squared masonry at the top, above the eaves level of the smithy. It has a graduated slate roof and a brick chimney. The smithy (No. 1) is made of random rubble and has a graduated stone slate roof.
The building has a linear plan, with the house being double-depth and double-fronted, while the smithy extends to the left as a single-depth structure with two bays. The house has two low storeys and two windows, featuring a simple square-headed doorway that is slightly offset to the right of center. This doorway is flanked by three-light casements on the ground floor and two-light casements above, all of which have renewed joinery. The chimney is located behind the ridge to the left.
The smithy is a single storey and includes a wagon doorway to the left with a wooden lintel, a square window to the right with wooden shutters, and a quoin stone inscribed "1713" to the right of the window. Additionally, beside the left corner of this range is a cubic cheese-press stone, which was mistakenly identified as an anvil in previous listings.
The buildings in the Little Crosby Conservation Area collectively form a valuable group, showcasing a variety of dates, materials, and styles.
