Description

Heatherlea Farmhouse and the attached barn to the south are a farmhouse and barn dating from the early 18th century, with some alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of brown handmade brick in an irregular bond, while the barn is made of coursed sandstone rubble. Both buildings have slate roofs, with the farmhouse roof being graduated.

The farmhouse is double-depth and double-fronted, consisting of two storeys plus an attic, and features three windows on the front (the centre one is blocked). There is a two-course band above each floor, a segmental-headed doorway in the centre with a 20th-century half-glazed door, and square segmental-headed windows on both floors. All windows have rebuilt surrounds and are fitted with 3-light casements, except for the blocked central window on the first floor. The openings have gauged brick heads, and there are gable chimneys and a small attic window in each gable wall. The rear of the farmhouse has been slightly altered and includes a central stair-window.

Inside, the farmhouse has been altered, but modern boarding on the staircase may hide the original balusters. The attached barn is single storey and features three blocked square windows near the left end, along with slit breathers just below the eaves. The rear of the barn has a wagon doorway with a lintel made from a reused 17th-century floor joist, and the interior contains a similar reused beam.

Together, the farmhouse and barn contribute to the character of the Little Crosby Conservation Area, forming a valuable group of buildings that vary in date, materials, and style while maintaining a similar scale.
