Description

This is a barn with a coach house and later additions, forming a range along one side of a cobbled farmyard. It is located in Little Crosby and now serves as a meeting hall, dwelling, classrooms, dining room, and offices for the Crosby Hall Educational Trust.

The core of the barn likely dates back to the 16th century, with significant remodeling and shortening occurring in the 17th century. A stable range was added in the late 18th or early 19th century. Recent conversions have incorporated alterations and additions. The building is constructed of squared sandstone with stone slate roofs and coped gables, with a brick gin-house section topped with slate.

Originally timber-framed and at least six bays wide, the barn was shortened at the north end and re-clad with stone in the 17th century. The southern half was later converted into a coach house by blocking wagon doorways and inserting a stone partition wall. The south front features a chamfered plinth, an inserted round-headed doorway with a slit breather above, a 12-pane window, a pair of blocked elliptical-arched wagon doorways with rusticated surrounds and keystones, 2-light casement windows, and other inserted windows. The north gable wall, partly obscured by a 19th-century polygonal gin-house (now a meeting room), has chamfered slit-breathers, an owl-hole, and an opening for a former horse-gin’s drive shaft.

Inside, the northern section contains three massive collar trusses and wind-braced purlins, with two more trusses reportedly present in the southern section (currently a dwelling and inaccessible). The stable range is a long, two-story, seven-window block with paired round-headed doorways, imposts, keystones, fanlights with radiating glazing bars, and square windows. A low outbuilding, formerly saddle rooms, is attached to the west end of the north side of the stable range and has been recently altered. The building forms a group with other former farm buildings nearby.
