Description

Southport Pier is a pleasure pier built between 1859 and 1860 by J. Brunlees and constructed by W. and J. Galloway. It was extended in 1864 and 1868 to reach a length of 1,342 meters. The pier was shortened after a fire in 1897, and both the pier head and pavilion were destroyed by another fire in 1933. Further fire damage occurred in 1959. The structure is made of cast iron and wood, featuring four rows of linked cast-iron columns that support girders, with a wooden boarded deck. A café was added at the seaward end in 1963, and the entrance range was rebuilt in 1970.
