Description

The Church of St. James is a Catholic church built in 1885 by C. Hadfield of M.E. Hadfield and Sons from Sheffield. It is constructed of stone and features a slate roof. The church consists of a nave with aisles, a southwest tower, a chancel, and north and south chapels.

The five-bay nave is distinguished by three-light windows with Geometrical tracery set between deep buttresses, while the clerestory has paired windows with Y-tracery. The west end of the north aisle serves as a chapel, featuring a canted end, a two-light trefoil-headed west window, tall buttresses, and a pavilion roof. The tower is adorned with slender buttresses and has a three-light window above the south entrance. Its octagonal top stage is complemented by octagonal pinnacles, two-light louvred bell openings, gargoyles, and an embattled parapet. At the west end of the nave, there is a five-light window above a gabled entrance with two orders and a traceried tympanum, flanked by octagonal pinnacles. The east end of the chancel features angle buttresses with gabled pinnacles, a five-light east window with a trefoil frieze above, and a three-light window in the gable. The north chapel has a canted end with 1:2:1 light windows, while the south chapel includes a five-light window and a gable to the south with a rose window.

Inside, the church has tall six-bay nave arcades supported by alternate circular and octagonal piers, and the roof features moulded collar trusses. There is a three-bay arcade leading to the baptistery, with a west organ loft above. The chancel and chapels are designed with rib vaults, and there is a marble continuous altar rail and reredoses. The chancel includes a reredos with 15 statues in niches, and the altar is topped with an arched ciborium. An alabaster pulpit on the south side of the nave features a relief panel and statues. Additionally, there are confessionals and a passage leading to the presbytery on the south side of the church.
