Description
The Church of St Luke, built between 1852 and 1853 by W. Culshaw, is located on St. Luke's Church Road in Formby. This Grade II listed church features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The structure includes a nave, transepts, chancel, and a south porch.
The five-bay nave is characterized by 2-light windows with simple Geometrical tracery set between weathered buttresses. The west front showcases a window with three trefoil-headed lights, complete with shafts and a segmental hood mould that continues as a drip mould. Below this is the foundation stone, and above, a rose window. The exterior is further enhanced by diagonal buttresses and a bellcote. The south porch is supported by clasping buttresses.
The transepts also feature diagonal buttresses and 2-light windows with louvred trefoils; the north transept includes an east entrance and chimney, while the south transept has an east entrance with a window above. The chancel is adorned with a parapet that has quatrefoil piercings, gabled angle buttresses, and a three-light east window.
Inside, the church boasts arch-braced collar trusses resting on corbels, and there is notable stained glass in the west windows. The arches leading to the transepts die into the jambs, with a north organ loft and south vestry. Additional features include a brass altar rail and a Norman font of simple design with cable moulding.
