Description
St. Katherine's Chapel, part of Lydiate Abbey, is a ruined chapel dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, built for John or Lawrence Ireland. The structure is made of stone and features a five-bay nave, a south porch, and a west tower. The nave has diagonal buttresses and remnants of a cornice. It includes three-light Perpendicular south windows with transoms, and the central windows retain some tracery, situated between weathered buttresses. The porch at the western end now only has the lower parts of its walls remaining, as of 1985, and features a Tudor-arched entrance. The north wall is blank and supported by buttresses. The east end has walls that flank a window up to the springers. The tower consists of three stages, with dripmoulds and diagonal buttresses, while the west window is missing its tracery. The tower has two-light bell openings at the top. Inside, there is a four-centred tower arch resting on half-octagonal responds.
