Description
No. 118 Duke Street is a house built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has three storeys and a basement, with three bays. There is a ground floor sill band and a first floor sill band that is interrupted by lengthened windows. A cornice runs along the top. To the right, there is a round-arched doorway flanked by engaged Doric columns, which support dosserets and an open pediment. The entrance has a six-panel door and a tall fanlight above it. The windows have stone sills and wedge lintels, and all are sashed, with those on the first and second floors featuring glazing bars. Panelled reveals or shutters can be seen. The basement area is enclosed by plain iron railings. Notably, this house is the birthplace of the poet Felicia Hemans, born in 1793. Inside, there are said to be pedimented doorcases, a staircase, and decorative features.
