Description
The Church of St Peter is a Roman Catholic church built in 1788, with a sanctuary added in 1845. It is constructed of stucco and features two storeys with six bays. The ground floor has segmental-headed windows, while the gallery above has round-headed windows, all fitted with leaded glazing. There is a projecting vestry at the first bay and a two-storey porch that includes a pediment, fluted Doric columns, a frieze, and a cornice, with the date of 1788 displayed in metopes and a window in the upper storey.
Inside, the church has a gallery on three sides supported by columns with leaf capitals and a flat ceiling. There is a mural monument to the founder, who died in 1814, depicted as a draped urn. The sanctuary is more ornate, featuring gilded Composite pilasters, an altar with columns and a pediment, a modillioned cornice, and a segmental arched ceiling. Additionally, there are relief mural monuments from 1837, 1840, and 1847. The sanctuary is noted to project into No. 76. This church is recognized as the oldest Roman Catholic church in Liverpool.
