Description
Sandy Knowe is a house that has been converted into flats. It was designed and built by Sir James Picton, who was both an architect and historian, and features an inscription on the frieze that reads "Laus Deo 1847". The building is constructed from stone and has a slate roof. It is laid out in an L-plan with an octagonal turret at the angle and an octagonal extension to the southeast. The structure is two storeys high with an attic.
Notable architectural features include a drip mould over the ground floor, a top frieze and cornice, and an inscription on the turret. Most windows are mullioned, with one to the left of the turret set in a projection under a lean-to roof. To the right of the turret, there is a gabled bay that has a two-storey canted bay window with a parapet. The building also has two shaped gables with finials.
The entrance to the turret is in a Jacobean style, featuring a segmental head and curved spandrels, with flanking columns that taper towards their bases, a cornice, and strapwork cresting; this entrance has now been converted into a window. The octagonal extension, which was originally the library, is a single storey with a Lombard frieze and the Picton arms. This extension has been significantly altered, with an inserted window and a new mansard roof, and the chimney has been removed. There are also 20th-century extensions that adjoin the library. Sir James Picton lived in this house until his death in 1889.
