Description
The Eighth The King's Regiment Indian Rebellion Memorial, located at the north end of Whitley Gardens, is a memorial built in 1863 to honor the soldiers of the 8th King's Regiment who died during the Indian Mutiny. It features a limestone Celtic cross set on a sandstone base. The front of the cross displays three relief scenes, which have become very worn over time; the central scene depicts fighting, while the lower scene illustrates a burial. The sandstone base is inscribed with the following text:
"THIS CROSS / COMMEMORATES THE SERVICES AND DEATHS / OF / 243 OFFICERS, NC OFFICERS AND PRIVATE SOLDIERS / LOST BY THE 8th KINGS REGIMENT / WHILE ENGAGED IN SUPPRESSING THE GREAT SEPOY MUTINY / OF 1857-1858 / SOME DIED IN BATTLE, SOME OF WOUNDS / SOME OF DISEASE / ALL / IN THE DEVOTED PERFORMANCE OF DUTY."
On the left side of the base, it states: "ERECTED AT PORTSMOUTH 1863," and on the right side: "REMOVED TO CHELSEA 1877." The rear of the base notes: "REMOVED TO LIVERPOOL 1911."
