Description

The Chapel of Saint Patrick is a Roman Catholic church built between 1821 and 1827 by architect John Slater. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has slate roofs, standing two storeys tall. The building features a stone base, a first-floor sill course, a top frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The west front has four bays under a pediment topped with a Calvary cross. The ground floor has segmental-headed windows, while the first floor has round-headed windows. A recessed stair leads to the entrance, which is flanked by wings with Doric tetrastyle porches and blind windows above, with entrances framed in architraves. A statue of St. Patrick is positioned on a plinth between the central blind first-floor windows, and a plaque below records the building's history. The windows are fitted with iron casements. At the east end, there is a low block containing vestries, and the north stair bay has a square louvre.

Inside, the chapel features a gallery on three sides supported by iron columns. An elaborate baldachino, added in 1953, has Corinthian columns and an ornate entablature, with a painting beneath it created in 1834 by de Keyser. The ceiling is panelled and has a segmental arch design, adorned with foliated roundels and Greek key ornamentation.
