Description
The water tower and north building of the water works, designed by T. Duncan and built in 1857, is constructed from snecked stone. The water tower features three stages: the lower stage is rusticated and has a round-arched arcade with twelve arches and a flat band above. The second stage includes a round-arched arcade with an impost band and keystone, topped with a bracketed cornice. The third stage is recessed and contains an iron water tank supported by iron brackets. Inside, there is a central decagonal stone column and two concentric arcades with stone columns and brick arches extending in both directions.
To the south, there is an adjoining square tower with quoins, a bracketed cornice, and antefixae. It has two stages of round-headed lights with louvres. The adjoining block to the south is two storeys high and has four bays, with round-headed reveals on the ground floor. It features a top cornice and a high parapet with a blind arcade, along with steps to the left leading to a round-headed entrance on the first floor. The first bay of this block includes a window with three round-headed lights beneath a gable.
